About Us
Founded a century ago by our ancestors, the Greek Community of Beirut is a Non Profitable Organization that undertakes its activities in a permanent and uninterrupted manner in accordance with the laws in force and its approved statutes.
It has been almost a century since a large and close-knit Greek community settled in Lebanon. At the very beginning and during the Ottoman occupation there were many Greeks who were established in this region (Saida, Beirut, Tripoli …). Some of them were traders or employed by the Ottoman authority, and others came to make their professional university studies. Throughout its history, rich in the multitude of destinies that make it up, the Greek Community has continuously carried out social and cultural activities around its schools, organizations, clubs, embassies and consulates.
Now, the Greek Community of Beirut organizes various activities and participates in many events aiming to promote and strengthen the ties between the Greeks living in Lebanon and with the Lebanese people.
The Greek Community of Beirut also operates one of the most modern language centers in Lebanon. It teaches the Greek language in accordance to the guidelines set out by the Greek Ministry of Education. It is also an official examination center for the students wishing to obtain the Greek Language Certificates of Attainment.
OUR GOALS
- Maintain and strengthen the ties between the Greeks living in Lebanon and the Lebanese people.
- Maintain, develop and strengthen the ties with Greece.
- Maintain and strengthen the traditional ties of friendship with Lebanon.
- Promote the culture and knowledge of the Greek language by providing higher means of education approved by the educational authorities in Greece.
- Project a positive image about Greece and Greeks in the Lebanese society and to the Lebanese people.
- The Greek Community of Beirut undertakes a lot of philanthropic work to underprivileged Greeks living in Lebanon, which is done very discretely.
- One of our goals is to make the Greek Cultural Center a meeting point for all Greeks in Lebanon and a reference for the Greek language, and Greek culture with the help of the Greek Embassy and our local partners.
Facilities
Located in the heart of Beirut, at the «Parallel Towers» in Dekwaneh, our Cultural Center is based on the second and third floor of the Βlock A.
The Cultural Centre is equipped with a multi-purpose room that can hold more than 150 people seated during conferences, and is also transformed into an exhibition hall for the various traditional official events.
On the second floor there is a soundproof projection room where films are screened in our cine-club called «Cinéphiles».
We created a multimedia Library with more than 2000 titles including books, DVDs, CDs for kids and adults which our members can consult at their own convenience.
